Wicked BIO
With music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Winnie Holzman, Wicked is based on Gregory Maguire's 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. The original Broadway production opened at New York's Gershwin Theatre on October 30, 2003, and became one of Broadway's longest-running and highest-grossing musicals. The show has also played in London, toured across the United States, and reached audiences through international productions.
Its best-known songs include “Defying Gravity,” “Popular,” “The Wizard and I,” and “For Good.” The story's themes of friendship and being an outsider have helped it connect with a wide range of audiences, while the 2024 film adaptation brought renewed attention to the musical. The supplied event listing confirms a Des Moines performance on, but does not specify earlier dates at the Civic Center; no prior local run is assumed here.
